AG’s contract extended for another year

Former Federal Court judge Idrus Harun to serve as the Attorney-General for a third year.

Idrus Harun’s contract as Attorney-General has been renewed effective March 6, 2022, the chief secretary to the government announced today.
PETALING JAYA:
Attorney-General (AG) Idrus Harun’s contract has been extended for one year.

In a statement, chief secretary to the government Zuki Ali said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had consented to Idrus’ appointment for a period of one year, effective March 6.

The appointment was done in accordance with Clause (1) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, he said.

Idrus’ contract expired on March 5.

The 67-year-old former Federal Court judge was initially appointed to the position on a two-year contract on March 6, 2020, days after Muhyiddin Yassin took office as prime minister.

Idrus took over from Tommy Thomas, who was appointed by the Pakatan Harapan government after it swept to power in the May 2018 general election.

The confirmation of Idrus’ contract extension comes after much uncertainty over the position.

Malaysian Bar president AG Kalidas, Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran and Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo were among those who had voiced concern over the delay in the announcement.
