41 of 160 ‘sick’ projects restored, says minister

Economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed says 51 others are in the rehabilitation phase.

Economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed says MPs should monitor development projects so they are completed as scheduled.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A total of 160 projects nationwide have been categorised as “sick” or problematic, and out of this figure, 92 are being monitored by the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed told the Dewan Rakyat that out of the 92 projects, 41 have been restored according to schedule.

“The remaining 51 are in the rehabilitation phase,” he said in reply to a question from Syed Abu Hussin Syed Abdul Fasal (Bersatu-Bukit Gantang), who asked about development projects that had been abandoned.

Projects are categorised as “sick” when their progress is delayed by more than 20% compared with the planned schedule.

Mustapa also urged MPs with abandoned or delayed projects in their constituencies to write to him.

“We have a monitoring system, but MPs need to become the eyes and ears of the government so we can ensure that each project is completed as planned,” he said.

Mustapa said for 2022 – the second year under the 12th Malaysia Plan – 6,755 projects under development expenditure had been approved with an allocation of RM75.6 billion. Of the total, 5,400 projects were brought forward from the 11th Malaysia Plan.

To ensure that projects were implemented smoothly, he and chief secretary to the government Mohd Zuki Ali had co-chaired a committee to expedite such projects.

Since its inception in December 2020, the committee has met 10 times, most recently on Jan 31.
