PETALING JAYA:
The nation’s first Orang Asli MP has thanked Umno and Barisan Nasional for nominating him as the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, saying his candidacy proves that representatives from the community were up for the task.

Ramli Mohd Nor vowed that he would execute the responsibility with integrity and impartiality when presiding over any motion tabled in the interest of the people.

“May God guide me in carrying out my responsibilities in a just and fair manner,” he said in a statement.

He chaired his first Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday evening.

In October last year, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan revealed that Umno had nominated Ramli for the post.

Ahmad said the decision was agreed upon by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also an Umno vice-president.

A retired senior policeman, Ramli, who won the Cameron Highlands by-election in January 2019, is Malaysia’s only Orang Asli MP.

The Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker’s position became vacant following Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said’s resignation on Aug 23.
