PETALING JAYA:
Eleven Malaysians and a Singaporean have been evacuated from Kyiv and have arrived in Poland, foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah said today.

In a Facebook post this morning, he said the group, which was led by the interim Charge D’ Affairs of the Malaysian embassy in Ukraine, Fadhilah Daud, arrived safely at Korczowa-Krakovets, a town on the border between Ukraine and Poland.

He said the convoy arrived at 5.45am (Malaysian time) and was met by two officials from the Malaysian embassy in Poland and were headed to the capital city of Warsaw.

The group included two dependents of the Malaysian diplomats.

“They are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur soon,” he said.

Yesterday, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Malaysian diplomats in Ukraine had to flee Kyiv by road after the foreign ministry purportedly bungled their evacuation.

According to the report, the party, comprising eight Malaysians and two foreign national dependents, embarked on their 782km journey to Poland in four cars, after a chartered bus allegedly failed to arrive.

A government source confirmed with FMT yesterday that an evacuation was currently under way. A spokesman for Wisma Putra (the foreign ministry) chose not to comment on the SCMP report.

The SCMP said several official sources had told the newspaper, independently of each other, that Wisma Putra had bungled the evacuation of the embassy staff.
