KUALA LUMPUR:
The sessions court today sentenced a Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) officer to three years jail on an alternative charge of dishonest misappropriation of US$6.94 million seized by the agency in former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation chief Hasanah Ab Hamid’s case.

Judge Suzana Hussin meted out the sentence to Shahrum Nizam Baharuddin after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge under Section 403 of the Penal Code. He was originally charged with criminal breach of trust under Section 409 of the same code.

Suzana also ordered Shahrum to be caned twice, and that he serves his jail sentence from his date of arrest – Sept 13, 2021.

Shahrum committed the offence between Dec 17, 2018 and April 9, 2019 at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

He is currently serving his two-year detention at the Simpang Renggam centre in Johor under the Dangerous Drugs Act (Special Preventive Measures).

During mitigation, his lawyer, Ahmad Hafiz A Bakar, told the court that his client apologised for the wrongdoing.

“He has promised not to repeat the offence.

“We hope the court can impose a minimum sentence so he can start a new life after he completes his sentence,” he added.

Meanwhile, deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
