Gerak is a joint initiative headed by Malaysian Action for Justice and Unity Foundation (Maju) with other NGOs that are pushing for independent candidates to become MPs in GE15. 

The movement had previously announced its independent candidates for GE15.

The six are human rights lawyer and activist Siti Kasim, former Umno MP for Sungai Benut Tawfik Ismail, former journalist Charles CJ Chow, Wangsa Maju resident Raveentheran Suntheralingam, activist KJ John, and Sabah-based lawyer Roland Cheng.

The constituencies they would be contesting are: Siti (Batu), John (Petaling Jaya), Raveentheran (Wangsa Maju), Chow (Subang), Cheng (Kota Kinabalu). All these seats are currently held by Pakatan Harapan.

Meanwhile, Tawfik did not confirm where he would contest, but hinted at Langkawi, Pagoh, Ampang, Mersing and Simpang Renggam as possibilities.

Asked why Gerak eyed seats held by the opposition, Siti said the movement aimed to fight in “underperforming places where the frogs thrive”.

Siti added that Gerak would be fielding about 10 candidates in GE15.

“We are identifying the rest of the candidates and will announce them later,” she said in a press conference today.

Gerak said it was open to forming strategic alliances with other parties or “like-minded” individuals to further its cause, which would make the country fairer to all.

The public can view the candidates’ profile on the Gerak mobile application (Gerak App), which aims to improve communication between the people and the independent candidates.
