MP sounds alarm over ‘deceased’ and ‘expired’ voters on electoral roll

Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh says a check on the latest voters' list for the Johor polls shows that some of the individuals are dead.

Fuziah Salleh says PKR has detected irregularities in the list of new voters registered by the EC between Sept 30 and Dec 31 last year.
PETALING JAYA:
The electoral roll for next month’s Johor elections contains irregularities, including “deceased” and “expired” voters, a PKR MP has claimed.

Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh also shared screenshots of the alleged irregularities.

The PKR director of elections told FMT they were detected when the party’s data unit scrutinised the list of new voters registered by the Election Commission (EC) between Sept 30 and Dec 31, 2021.

She said these voters were among the 5.8 million new voters who are above the age of 18 and previously unregistered. Their names were listed in the supplementary electoral roll, known officially as Daftar Pemilih Tambahan (DPT).

Fuziah said that typically, the EC would display the most recent electoral roll before gazetting it but this was not the case this time.

She said the electoral roll would usually be made available for purchase, though this time, her party had allegedly been given the runaround by the EC.

To date, she said, they had not been able to obtain the additional list of voters.

However, the party managed to get a PDF document containing the raw data, like MyKad numbers of those listed in the electoral roll, from the EC.

“But this data is not organised. It is very messy,” she said, adding the gazetted rolls that could be purchased provided a breakdown of voters based on their constituencies.

“How can the EC gazette data involving more than 5.8 million voters but fear its legitimacy? Will the Johor state elections be compromised because of irregularities in the voters’ list?” she asked.

Johor will go to the polls on March 12, with nominations set for Feb 26. Early voting will take place on March 8.

EC deputy chairman Azmi Sharom had said there would be 756,247 new voters for the elections, of whom 176,618 were aged between 18 and 20 years.

This followed Undi18 and automatic voter registration taking effect on Dec 15 last year.
