Warisan lodges report over carbon credit deal

The party had previously claimed that the deal had led to two million hectares of forest being 'handed over' to a Singapore-based company.

Warisan president Shafie Apdal had previously accused the state government of handing over two million hectares of forest.
KOTA KINABALU:
Warisan has lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA) between the Sabah government and a Singapore-based company.
Loretto Padua Jr.

The report was lodged by Warisan secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr at the MACC office here today.

Loretto said his decision to lodge the report was not politically motivated, but was made as a Malaysian who wanted the country’s sovereignty to be protected.

“I had my statement recorded during the process that lasted for two hours, I was also asked not to tell in detail about my report, but in general it is about the NCA,” he told reporters.

The NCA is an agreement involving carbon credit trading, which is a market-based system that provides financial incentive to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming.

Yesterday, deputy chief minister Jeffrey Kitingan was reported to have said that the NCA did not involve the sale or collateral of forest land as alleged by opposition leaders.

Prior to this, Warisan president Shafie Apdal claimed that the 100-year NCA agreement had caused two million hectares of forest in Sabah to be “handed over” to a company based in Singapore.
