It’s a family issue, pasembor stall owner says over fight with rival operator

Trader at Penang food court says the issue has been resolved amicably and wants to move on.

One of the owners denies the fight between his workers and that of another stall was caused by an argument over a customer.
GEORGE TOWN:
An operator of a pasembor stall at the Medan Renong food court here said a fight between his workers and those from a rival stall had nothing to do with a “mad rush” for a celebrity.

“We were not jostling for customers, as speculated on social media. It was a family issue. However, there is no denying there was a fight.

“Police have investigated. We have settled the issue amicably and we want to move on,” one of the stall owners told FMT today.

The police, who earlier revealed that the stall operators are related, have taken statements from seven men in their 30s.

“They are being investigated for rioting. All have been released on bail,” Northeast district acting police chief Saravanan Velu said.

The city council today issued the two pasembor stall operators show-cause letters and will decide on punitive action against the traders, which could be as severe as revoking their trading licences.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Penjaja Kompleks Makanan Medan Renong Padang Kota Lama chairman Asmadi Mohd Razali said the fight on Tuesday was due to a misunderstanding between two outlets, and nothing more.

“Both parties have solved the issue amicably. Although in business there can be misunderstandings, customers need not fret,” he said in a statement.
