PETALING JAYA:
An independent election candidate in the Port Dickson by-election in 2018 was charged with murdering her husband at the magistrates’ court in Seremban today.

Lau Seck Yan allegedly stabbed her husband, Poh Seng Hiap, 55, in the chest and waist at their home at the Rasah Kemayan Golf and Country Township on Sunday. The former accountant was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Lau, a former lecturer, was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty upon conviction, Bernama reported.

No plea was recorded after the charge was read to her before magistrate Norzaliza Tesmin.

Earlier, the accused was seen shouting as the police escorted her into the courtroom at 9.30am.

“I didn’t kill him! He pushed me! He attacked me!” she told the media.

“I didn’t kill anyone! I am the victim… They want to investigate me according to Section (302), which is not fair to me… The officer refused to investigate under another section.”

She repeated the line in court after being told of the charge.

“I am not willing to be charged under that section. This is not the truth. I shouldn’t be charged under the act,” the 55-year-old Lau told the court.

The requests by Lau’s lawyer, Ng Kian Nam, for the court to send her for a psychiatric evaluation and to be granted bail were both denied.

Norzaliza fixed Feb 25 for the next mention.

Lau and her husband have four children and the youngest two were believed to have been at home and witnessed the stabbing.

At the 2018 Port Dickson by-election, Lau, who was the only woman among seven candidates, garnered only 214 votes. The parliamentary seat was won by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
