Hold off projects which may affect Taman Sri Muda, says Najib

Ex-prime minister Najib Razak says claims that projects nearby have overwhelmed Taman Sri Muda’s drainage and flood control system must be looked into.

Citing two FMT reports, Najib Razak said appropriate measures must be taken to prevent the floods in Taman Sri Muda from recurring.
PETALING JAYA:
Former prime minister Najib Razak wants the Selangor government to temporarily suspend new development projects in Taman Sri Muda and its surrounding areas.

In a Facebook post, he said he just received information pertaining to the floods that ravaged Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, on Dec 17 and 18 last year.

“So far 55 lives have been lost nationwide and 14 of those lives were from Taman Sri Muda,” he said.

In the post, Najib cited two articles by FMT quoting the Taman Sri Muda residents’ association.

“According to them, the existing drainage and flood control system could not withstand the floods in December because new projects in the area were piggybacking on the system.

“In other words, they are alleging that development in nearby areas has overtaken Taman Sri Muda’s drainage and flood control system,” he said.

Najib also highlighted the pictures in his post showing the rapid development near Taman Sri Muda since 2011.

“An investigation into the allegations of the residents’ association must be completed. Appropriate measures must be taken to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy,” he said, adding that in the meantime all development projects in and around the area should be suspended.
