PETALING JAYA:
There was no foul play involved in the death of a 37-year-old man at a police lock-up in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, police said.

The man was reported to have died on Sunday afternoon while under remand for drug-related offences at the Pengkalan Chepa police station.

Bukit Aman’s director of the integrity and standards compliance department, Azri Ahmad, said an autopsy found “no injuries or elements of crime”.

“The cause of death is water in the lungs. The incident has been classified as sudden death,” he said in a statement today.

“However, the integrity and standards compliance department’s death in custody investigation unit will continue the probe from a variety of angles before submitting its results to the deputy public prosecutor for a decision.”

This was the second custodial death in less than a week, following the death of a man who was locked up at the Taiping district police headquarters.

Two police officers and two of the victim’s fellow inmates were arrested in connection with the death and have been remanded until Jan 20.
