Another death in custody, this time in Kota Bharu

Police say the 37-year-old man had been arrested for drug-related offences.

Yesterday’s death in custody in Pengkalan Chepa follows a case in the Taiping police lock-up on Jan 13.
PETALING JAYA:
Police have reported another death in custody, this time in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, just days after another man died in a lockup in Taiping, Perak.

In a statement, Bukit Aman’s director of the integrity and standards compliance department, Azri Ahmad, said the death occurred yesterday at the Pengkalan Chepa police station at 4.35pm.

He said the 37-year-old man had been arrested for drug offences and was to be detained from Jan 16 to 19.

Azri said the alleged offences were related to Sections 12(2) and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which involve possession and consumption of illicit drugs, respectively.

“The integrity and standards compliance department’s death in custody investigation unit will be conducting an investigation on this case,” he said.

The latest death comes just four days after a 63-year-old man died at the Taiping district police headquarters while awaiting his case’s second mention in court.

Two police officers and two of the victim’s fellow inmates have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been remanded until Jan 20.
