KUCHING:
The Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister‘s Department is studying a proposal to build four new courts in Sarawak under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to accommodate the rising number of cases.

Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the new courts would be located in Limbang, Sri Aman, Mukah and Kapit.

The government also approved an allocation of RM9.2 million for 14 projects under the 12MP (2021-2025) to upgrade, refurbish, and maintain court buildings in Sarawak.

The upgrading would involve the court complexes in Kuching, Bintulu and Miri as well as the courts in Kota Samarahan, Sibu and Sarikei, reported Bernama.

“I also found many courts in Sarawak are located in shared buildings with other government departments.

“There are also courts where the judges have to enter via public areas. Judges should have their private entrances to the courts,” he told reporters after a visit to the Kuching court complex.

In addition, Wan Junaidi said the government proposes to build an official residence for the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak in Kuching.
