1,864 pigs with swine fever culled in Melaka

The veterinary services department says pigs from 16 commercial farms were confirmed infected with African swine fever.

The 35 pig farms in Paya Mengkuang in Melaka will continue to be monitored to detect cases of African swine fever, said the veterinary services department.
MELAKA:
The veterinary services department (JPV) has confirmed that pigs at 16 commercial pig farms were infected with the African swine fever in Paya Mengkuang in Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, about 30km from here.

Its director-general, Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor said JPV enforced a ‘stamping out’ policy to control and prevent the spread of the disease through the culling of infected farm-bred pigs.

“The pigs were destroyed using the CO2 gas method before being properly buried. A total of 1,864 pigs confirmed positive in the Paya Mengkuang area have been culled as of yesterday,” she said.

Norlizan said monitoring, clinical examinations and samplings of all 35 pig farms in Paya Mengkuang will continue to be actively carried out to detect ASF infections.

She said monitoring and examination were also being conducted for pig farms nationwide.

Pig farmers and the public are asked to quickly report the death of any wild boar, pig or commercially-reared pig to the nearest district or state veterinary services office.
