In a statement today, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the special sitting has been fixed in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat.
“This parliamentary sitting will discuss matters of national interest such as the floods and post-flood situation, the coordination of aid to the victims, and the long-term planning of flood disaster management.
“This special sitting has received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah,” Ismail said.
He added that this special parliamentary sitting will provide the opportunity for the government to explain to the people the actions and planning undertaken to address the issues related to the floods.
“This session is also a good platform for the MPs to get feedback on this issue,” he said.
The announcement by the prime minister came after calls from various quarters for the special sitting to be held.
Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed for a special Dewan Rakyat sitting to discuss the ongoing floods to allow MPs to convey the people’s concerns and give suggestions that could help the government during this crisis.
On Dec 31, the Pakatan Harapan presidential council called for a special Dewan sitting, for Ismail and his Cabinet members to explain to the people on the government’s failure in managing the crisis.
