PETALING JAYA:
Segamat in the south of Johor became one of the hardest-hit districts when the second wave of floods swept the state.

As at 4pm, Sungai Segamat in Kampung Awat and Sungai Muar in Buloh Kasap had been classified as reaching the danger level, according to Segamat MP Edmund Santhara Kumar.

He also said that as at 2pm, Jalan Kuala Paya in Kampung Balai Badang, Jalan Putting in Kampung Putting and Jalan Jabi in Kampung Bukit Tempurong, as well as Jalan Tumang and Jalan Serakek, had been closed due to the floods.

“The authorities are monitoring the water level and have put up warning signs at hotspots,” the deputy tourism, arts and culture minister told FMT.

According to the social welfare department’s (JKM) Info Bencana website, updated at 6.50pm, Johor had evacuated 2,684 people, with 2,508 of them from Segamat, due to the floods.

The state has also opened up 43 relief centres to accommodate the rising number of flood victims.

“The district disaster committee chairman is the only person authorised to carry out action plans,” Santhara said.

“However, as an MP, I’ve been giving out as much assistance as I can to all the relief centres by providing them with food baskets, blankets, hand sanitisers, and face masks,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Central Brigade General Operations Force (GOF) will be mobilised to assist in flood operations in the Segamat district from tomorrow.

Johor acting police chief, Khaw Kok Chin said for a start, one platoon comprising 42 members will be sent out to the district, and the number will be increased depending on the situation.

“The badly affected areas are Labis, Jementah, Tenang, Buloh Kasap, Segamat town and Batu Anam,” he said.

Other areas being monitored include Tangkak and Kota Tinggi, where teams would be mobilised if necessary, he added.
