A worker was killed when an iron structure fell on him at a construction site In Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
PETALING JAYA:
The death of an Indonesian construction worker yesterday could have been avoided if his employers had carried out a comprehensive risk assessment, the department of occupational safety and health for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya said.

The worker was killed at the construction site at the Kuchai Lama Entrepreneurs Park after an iron structure fell on him.

In a statement today, the department said it had conducted an initial investigation into the incident and had issued a prohibition notice to stop all lifting work for a full investigation to be done.

“Witnesses will also be called to record evidence,” it said.

It said employers were responsible for carrying out the necessary assessment and implementing procedures to mitigate risks before work proceeded.

“This is to reduce risks to employees and prevent accidents.

“Such incidents can be avoided if the employer implements comprehensive ‘Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control’ measures.”

The department said it would take legal action if it was found there were violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and the Factories and Machinery Act 1967.
