PETALING JAYA:
Najib Razak has called for a fixed percentage of the proposed carbon tax to be channelled to the disaster trust fund to aid flood relief efforts.

In a Facebook post today, he said that as the federal government intended to introduce the tax in an attempt to make Malaysia a carbon neutral country, part of the funds could be used to provide greater assistance to disaster and flood victims.

“To provide greater assistance to disaster and flood victims, we feel there is a need for a special trust fund that can raise more money,” the former prime minister said.

He added that it was time for sectors that pollute the environment or cause climate change to directly contribute to help flood victims.

“Sectors such as the manufacturing industry, oil and gas industry, housing industry, logging sector and others should contribute directly to flood victims if they do not reduce their impact on climate change.”
