PETALING JAYA:
Life will no longer be the same for two villagers in Selangor whose livelihoods were destroyed in the massive floods that hit the state on Dec 18.

They are a 55-year-old from Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Melut, Dengkil, and an elderly man from Kampung Dusun Tua in Hulu Langat, whose struggles were highlighted in several Instagram posts made by Shazana Amin via her account @shazanaamin.

Shazana, from Mutiara Damansara, said the wooden house of the Orang Asli man, Sore, and his 50-year old wife, Suria, was destroyed after the floodwaters reached the roof.

“The house before the floods did not have electricity or a toilet, and they had been relying on their neighbours for both.

“He is not a Muslim, so he is not eligible for zakat. He has tried to apply for aid but could not get any.

“My friend Ida Farhanah and I gave them pillows and mattresses bought from the funds collected from friends and family,” she told FMT.

As for the elderly man in Hulu Langat, Shazana said his house, located near a river, was “turned 180 degrees” by the floods, causing one of its stilts to collapse.

“My husband and his friends, who had been helping victims in Kampung Dusun Tua, had to get his house upright so they could retrieve whatever belongings they had from the house, although it was a dangerous task since the house could collapse anytime.

“We managed to retrieve his sofa set and some of his valuables, including an expensive camel belt.”

Shazana said the man has been sleeping at a bus stop since he finds the temporary flood shelter uncomfortable.

“A villager told us he is offering his homestay for the flood victims to stay for six months, and we are trying to persuade the pak cik to stay there,” she said.

Shazana and her husband, Safwan Othman, are trying to raise funds for both men. Those who wish to help may do so by making a donation into Maybank account No. 5627 6840 2349 (Anith Shazana Aminuddin) or contact Safwan at [email protected]
