PM’s convoy got priority over ambulance as safety measure, say cops

Police say the entourage's lead vehicle was nearing the junction and allowing the ambulance to pass through could have posed a risk.

The ambulance was stopped at a road intersection in Hulu Langat to allow the prime minister’s entourage to pass through.
PETALING JAYA:
An ambulance was among the vehicles stopped to allow the prime minister’s convoy to pass through because the lead vehicle of the entourage was already nearing a junction, police said today.

Clarifying a viral video clip which showed an ambulance among the vehicles blocked at an intersection to give way for Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s convoy, police said there was a risk of an accident if the ambulance was allowed to pass through at that point in time.

In a statement, Selangor traffic police chief Azman Shariat said priority was given to the convoy because the lead vehicle was nearing the intersection, forcing the traffic officer to make the decision as allowed under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Azman said the convoy was heading to flood-affected areas in Hulu Langat.

“In the situation that was caught on video, there was a risk of an accident and danger to other road users if the four-wheel-drive and Malaysian Red Crescent ambulance were allowed to exit the intersection.

“Therefore, priority was given to the convoy on the main road to avoid any accident based on the traffic officer’s initial assessment.

“Once the convoy had passed, the traffic officer took action to ensure the ambulance and the four-wheel-drive passed through,” he said.

Yesterday, a short video went viral showing a four-wheel-drive and an ambulance being blocked at an intersection to give way for several vehicles carrying VIPs escorted by police.
