PUTRAJAYA:
A total of 405 Covid-19 cases have been detected among flood victims so far, said health minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

From the total, he said 285 were detected in Selangor, 103 in Pahang, 11 in Kelantan and one each in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Kuala Lumpur.

Khairy said only one case was found to be in Category 3, adding the patient had been isolated.

“All the other cases are in Category 1,” he told reporters at the health ministry here today.

He added the patients were either isolated in their homes or low-risk treatment centres.

Khairy said the health authorities are working with relevant government agencies to ensure  Covid-19 SOPs are observed at all temporary flood shelters (PPS).

“But we understand the shelters could be small and congested and measures like physical distancing will be hard to implement.

“But we have health staff such as nurses and doctors at almost all the PPS, to advise on the best possible way to implement the SOPs.

“We have also done away with mass testing, but instead instructed our staff to perform  targeted testing on those with symptoms,” he said.

Khairy said they had also ensured adequate medical supplies were available at the shelters and flooded areas to treat flood victims, adding that the ministry had deployed medical teams as well as mobile and field clinics to these areas.

He also reminded people affected by the floods to look after their personal hygiene and particularly avoid getting infected with water-borne diseases, apart from Covid-19.

“I understand that it will be difficult to wash your hands because there is no water at all at certain areas.

“So we hope people will be careful and inform the health authorities if they experience any symptoms,” he said.

To a question, Khairy said ministers returning from overseas trips will not be granted exemption from home quarantine.

He said this in response to the instruction by prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to Cabinet ministers who were abroad to return home to take part in flood relief efforts.

“At this moment, they are still required to undergo home quarantine because we have to take precautions in this matter,” he said.
