Sarawak voters with fever to vote in special tent

The Election Commission says 46,565 staff members will be on duty to facilitate the voting process.

Registered voters can begin casting their ballots for the Sarawak state elections at 7.30am tomorrow.
KUCHING:
Voters with symptoms and who do not pass temperature screenings for the Sarawak elections can vote in a special tent monitored by health officials, says the Election Commission.

“Persons under surveillance and persons under investigation who wish to vote must seek approval from the district health officer to go to their polling centre,” said Election Commission (EC) secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak.

A total of 1,866 polling centres involving 3,555 polling streams will be opened tomorrow, while 46,565 staff members will be on duty to facilitate the voting process that will be held from 7.30am to 5pm.

“A total of 1,213,769 voters will cast their ballots tomorrow,” Ikmalrudin said in a statement today.

He said voters were required to wear face masks, have their temperature checked, use hand sanitiser and practise physical distancing.

“Hand sanitisers will be provided at all polling centres. Voters will need to go through four stations, namely the main entrance, polling stream entrance, the polling stream itself before exiting.

Meanwhile, EC reminded all parties, especially voters, candidates and staff who wish to enter the polling centres tomorrow not to wear attire or bring materials that display names, symbols and pictures of the parties or candidates contesting, and any tagline or campaign slogans to polling centres.

To ensure the voting process runs smoothly, Ikmalrudin said EC staff had inspected equipment such as ballot boxes, the indelible ink and ballot papers to ensure that they are in good condition.

He also reminded employers to allow their workers to cast their ballots.

“Action can be taken against any employer found preventing their workers from going out to vote under Section 25(3) of the Election Offences Act 1954, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or one-year imprisonment upon conviction,” he said.
