PETALING JAYA:
An opposition assemblyman surprised the Perak state assembly today by holding up a whole, fresh chicken to protest against price increases over the past month.

Muhamad Arafat Varisai Mahamad (PH-Hulu Kinta) said he did so to remind Razman Zakaria, who is the state plantation, agriculture and food industry executive councillor, to take the issue of rising prices seriously, Sinar Harian reported.

“I would like to present this chicken as a gift because there has been no action taken by the executive councillor,” he was quoted as saying when debating the Perak Budget 2022.

“I am curious to know whether a discussion was held with retailers, entrepreneurs and wholesalers to see what is the cause for the price increases.

“Was there any action taken by the executive councillor?” he asked.

Arafat also said that he had spoken to wholesalers, retailers and the public to obtain information so as to get to the root of the problem.

Speaking to FMT later, Arafat said the stunt he pulled at the state assembly was to highlight the problems currently faced by the people.

“I wanted to show the seriousness of the matter and how price increases have affected the people,” he said.
