Govt not paying for Covid-19 SMS messages by MKN, Dewan told

Minister says the costs are being borne by 13 telcos as part of their corporate social responsibility.

The government has been sending out regular SMS messages since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.

The government does not spend a single sen on the regular SMS messages sent by the National Security Council (MKN) since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March last year.

The Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday the costs were borne by the telecommunication companies (telcos) that were involved in the public service announcement efforts.

“The telcos absorb the cost of the SMS messages as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR),” special functions minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad said in a written reply to Lim Kit Siang (PH-Iskandar Puteri).

He said he companies involved in the CSR campaign were Celcom, Digi, Maxis, UMobile, ALTEL, Webe, Tune Talk, Pavocomms, YTL, XOX, Redtone, Red One and Merchantrade.
