KUALA LUMPUR:
Former prime minister Najib Razak was turned away from the High Court for his 1MDB corruption trial here over his MySejahtera status.

His lawyer, Hariharan Tara Singh, told trial judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah that Najib and fellow counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had been flagged as “casual contacts” on MySejahtera and were told to leave the court building.

“Earlier this morning, they were allowed to come in after they refreshed their statuses.

“However, after answering some questions under the app’s ‘Covid-19 Status’ function, their statuses flipped back to yellow,” he said.

Hariharan said both Najib and Shafee were waiting outside the court compound.

Sequerah then told him to inform the duo to take a Covid-19 self-test.

“When their results are out, do inform the health ministry so that the statuses can be reassessed,” he added.

Najib is standing trial on 25 counts of money laundering and abuse of power over the alleged misuse of 1MDB funds amounting to RM2.28 billion deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.

Last week, Najib and his lawyers had to attend the Court of Appeal’s decision on his SRC International Sdn Bhd appeal through online proceedings as they had come in contact with Covid-19 patients.

The appeals court affirmed the lower court’s finding in convicting him on seven charges involving RM42 million in SRC International funds that had entered his accounts. It also upheld his 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine.

However, Najib was released on bail pending his final appeal before the Federal Court.
