KUALA LUMPUR:
The Dewan Rakyat has approved the federal government’s 2022 budget, passing the RM332.1 billion Supply Bill 2022 through a voice vote.

MPs have been debating the bill at committee stage since Nov 22, with each ministry’s budget passed through voice vote. The budget was passed at policy stage on Nov 18.

Some of the issues raised by MPs during the debates included rising vegetable and meat prices, the sluggish economy and jobs, and the worsening unity despite billions spent on programmes.

There were also shouting matches over funds of the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit.

A Malaysian-made vaccine was also a hot topic, with some MPs suggesting in jest that it be named “Bossku”, the popular moniker of former prime minister Najib Razak. Others called on the government to curb lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender shows over streaming services Netflix.

Heated arguments also ensued over the limited liquor ban in Kuala Lumpur, and the ban on 4D outlets in Kedah. There were also calls to use Malay language at all official functions and to house vernacular and national schools in the same compound.

The bill now goes to the Dewan Negara for further debate and approval.
