
The award recognises groups or individuals who put the good of those around them above themselves, with the Rotary club this year choosing to highlight the work of the media during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the awards ceremony at Sunway Resort today, Rotary International district governor Bindi Rajasegaran called reporters some of the forgotten frontliners of the health crisis.
“It is the highest honour reserved for exemplary individuals who have made life-changing contributions to society.
“This year, we have decided to recognise the media who continue to uphold their commitment to bringing news and information despite the risk to their health and well-being.”
She said that during times of crisis, be it environmental or health related, the media had always put itself on the line to inform the public.
“(The media) played a crucial role in bringing life-saving information to the public during the pandemic.
“Everyone was glued to the media during the most difficult time of the pandemic, eagerly awaiting news and developments. The media (brought) hope and sanity during those crazy, desperate times.”
The other media organisations recognised by Rotary International were New Straits Times, Astro Awani, The Edge, The Star, Malay Mail, Borneo Post, Utusan Malaysia, Bernama, Sin Chew Daily, Malaysia Nanban, Nanyang Siang Pau, Makkal Osai, China Press and Malaysiakini.
