KOTA BHARU:
More landslide early warning systems will be installed, especially in highland areas.

Currently, the system has been installed in several states such as Sabah, Kedah and Cameron Highlands in Pahang.

The government will also initiate an awareness campaign to alert the public on the occurrence of landslides, Bernama quoted energy and natural resources minister Takiyuddin Hassan as saying.

“The mineral and geoscience department (JMG) is monitoring the situation closely at landslide-prone spots.

“The system will also be installed in unoccupied areas such as Gunung Jerai, Kedah, because there is a possibility of landslides due to climate change,” he told reporters after presenting awards to students who excelled in examinations here today.

Takiyuddin said the installation of the early warning system could also prevent untoward incidents and even deaths.

The recent heavy rainfall has caused stretches of the roads leading to Cameron Highlands to collapse due to landslides.
