PETALING JAYA:
Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has listed 24 new candidates, including one woman, as part of its line-up for the upcoming Sarawak state elections.

In unveiling the “Sarawak First” slogan for the coalition’s election campaign today, chief minister Abang Johari Openg said GPS will contest in all 82 seats.

He added that the new candidates are in their 30s and 40s and have been trained and exposed to Sarawak politics.

“Sarawak will always champion a society comprising different races, religions, culture and heritage.

“Other than that, we support a new vision for the state based on digital economics and environmental sustainability,” he said during a press conference after handing out the letter of appointment to GPS candidates for the election at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters at Jalan Bako in Kuching today.

Sarawak goes to the polls on Dec 18, with nomination day set for Dec 6, and early voting on Dec 14.

Abang Johari said GPS wanted to give younger members in the party more exposure, citing how some of its candidates are as young as 30-years-old.

“This is GPS. When we say something, we do it. Youths bring with them various backgrounds that can bring continuity to Sarawak,” he said, adding that this would be the first time the coalition was contesting in an election under its own banner.

All the GPS component parties previously contested under Barisan Nasional (BN), but they left the federal coalition following the latter’s defeat in the last general election (GE14) in May 2018.

GPS is also set to announce its election manifesto on Dec 8.
