KUALA LUMPUR:
Transport minister Wee Ka Siong has dismissed rumours that former prime minister Najib Razak attended the recent meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project.

He said only Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, international trade and industry minister Azmin Ali, foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah and himself met with Lee at the meeting in Singapore, together with relevant government officers.

“YB Pekan (Najib) was not there. I don’t know where that story about other people being present at the meeting came from,” he told the Dewan Rakyat during his winding-up speech on the transport ministry’s 2022 Supply Bill.

He was questioned by RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) whether Najib was part of the group that went to Singapore.

Earlier, when Wee said he did not want to waste time speaking on the matter any further, Rayer interjected, saying: “This is Parliament. And we need answers.”

“We haven’t had a Cabinet meeting yet. I am expecting the prime minister to report to the Cabinet on the result of the meeting on Friday,” Wee added.

Taking a question from Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) on when work on the HSR was expected to start again, Wee said there was no timeline as yet.

It was reported that Ismail had proposed fresh talks to revive the KL-Singapore HSR project that was scrapped by the previous Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) administration.

Meanwhile, Lee said the republic was open to new proposals from Putrajaya on the project, though the HSR had been mutually terminated by both countries.

Last year, the PN-led government scrapped the project and proposed in its place a KL-Johor HSR line.

Ismail visited Singapore on Monday to mark the start of the vaccinated travel lane (VTL) between the two countries.
