Assistant director’s death not vaccine-related, says health DG

Dr Chai Koh Meow died due to coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction, says Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says Dr Chai Koh Meow did not die from his Covid-19 booster jab.
PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry says its senior principal assistant director, Dr Chai Koh Meow, did not die of complications arising from his vaccine booster shot.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Chai’s death on Nov 17 was caused by hemopericardium due to coronary heart disease and myocardial infarction.

There had been speculation that his death was linked to the vaccine.

Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who was present with Noor Hisham at a press conference, urged the public not to speculate any further now that the investigation had been completed.

He said there were other cases that were being looked into, but remained steadfast in his position that there had yet to be any local deaths linked to vaccines.

“To our knowledge, the booster is 100% safe. So, do not be afraid of the booster shot, it will protect you from very severe infection and potential death. Based on expert recommendations, the benefits far outweigh the risks,” he said.

On the adverse effects of the vaccination, Khairy said the ministry had only made eight payments of RM50,000 to recipients who had suffered negative side effects.

He said there were other cases under review or had been rejected for not being sufficiently severe, but the eight cases where compensation had been paid were a miniscule number compared to the millions of vaccinations given out across the country.
