Shaari Hasan, 60, claimed trial when the charge was read out to him by an interpreter before judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohammed Redza.

The widower is said to have committed the offence behind a house at Kampung Sungai Buaya in Rawang at about 1.30pm on July 27.

Those found guilty under section 377 of the Penal Code for voluntarily having carnal intercourse with an animal can be punished with a maximum jail term of 20 years and are also liable to a fine or whipping.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Khadijah Amir Hamdzah opposed bail as the offence was serious.

However, lawyer Zolazrai Zolkapli, who represented Shaari, said his client should be freed pending the outcome of the trial since it was a bailable offence.

The judge refused bail and fixed the case for mention on Dec 24.

On July 28, Hulu Selangor police chief Arsad Kamaruddin said the incident came to light after the goat’s owner heard the animal making strange sounds.

Upon checking, she discovered a man, whom she knew, half-naked next to the goat. The suspect fled the scene.

Arsad said that when she checked on the goat, she found it had died. The owner then lodged a police report.

The carcass was later sent to the veterinary services department for a post-mortem.
