KUALA LUMPUR:
Putrajaya has been in contact with Afghanistan’s Taliban leaders on basic human rights, including ensuring that the rights of women are protected, said deputy foreign minister Kamarudin Jaffar.

He told the Dewan Rakyat that a communication channel through the Malaysian embassy in Qatar had been opened in September.

He also said NGO Global Peace Mission Malaysia had been in talks with the Taliban to ensure that basic human rights were protected in Afghanistan.

He was replying to a supplementary question from Hasanuddin Mohd Yunus (PH-Hulu Langat), who had asked if awareness and education on human rights were being carried out in ensuring that the Taliban administered Afghanistan well.

To a supplementary question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) on recognising Afghanistan under Taliban rule, Kamarudin said Putrajaya has had diplomatic relations “with Kabul” since 1962.

He said all diplomatic relations were through Malaysia’s high commission in New Delhi, and that the Afghanistan embassy in Kuala Lumpur had been set up since 1980.
