PETALING JAYA:
The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) confirmed that the Hawk 108 fighter jet crash last night took place during a night flying drill.

In an updated statement, RMAF named the two pilots who were involved in the crash.

One of them, Major Mohd Fareez Omar, is receiving treatment for injuries at Seberang Jaya Hospital. He is in stable condition.

However, the other pilot, Captain Mohamad Affendi Bustamy, died.

“Both pilots were married. Both families were informed and RMAF will ensure the welfare of the families is prioritised.

“RMAF will establish a comprehensive investigation board to look into the incident,” it said.

No further details on the crash were provided in the statement.

It urged people not to speculate or spread any unverified information.

In a statement yesterday, RMAF said the crash happened at 10.07pm at the base’s runway.

The last incident involving an RMAF Hawk 108 fighter jet was in 2017, when one crashed into a swamp in Chukai, Terengganu, killing both pilots onboard.

Bernama reported that between 1996 and 2017, there were nine incidents involving RMAF Hawk 108 fighter jets.

Meanwhile, the most recent crash at the Butterworth Air Force Base, prior to yesterday’s incident, occurred on Dec 21, 2016. It involved a Beechcraft B200T aircraft which was used for training purposes. The pilot was killed while three officers were injured.
