Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor said the menteri besar’s remark equating Penang with gambling was an “insult” to Islamic institutions in the state.
He said menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor had cast a pall on religious enforcement in Penang, which spends RM70 million a year on Islamic affairs.
He also reminded Sanusi that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the leader of Islam in Penang, despite having a head of state who is not a sultan.
“As an elder, I want to advise Sanusi to be careful in making statements.
“He must protect the image of the respectable office he holds, not act like a village leader with limited powers.
“Sanusi should not create controversy with leaders of other states by coming out with statements. Instead, he should remain cordial with all,” he told FMT.
Salim said Sanusi should show his maturity in thinking and leading by example in the spirit of the Malaysian Family espoused by the prime minister.
