PETALING JAYA:
Melaka police will call up five Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for the state election after their supporters allegedly gathered near nomination centres, despite not being allowed to.

Melaka deputy police chief Razali Abu Samah said five investigation papers have been opened for the alleged SOP breaches during nominations on Monday.

State Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh, former chief minister Idris Haron, PH’s Julasapiyah Kassim and BN’s Rosli Abdullah and Ashraf Minghat are the five candidates who will be called up for questioning.

This comes a day after PH’s Kota Laksamana candidate, Low Chee Leong, was called up by the Melaka Tengah district police headquarters over similar SOP violations during his nomination.

“The investigations were opened under Section 269 of the Penal Code and the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations.

“All the candidates will be called in to have their statement recorded to facilitate our investigation,” Malaysiakini quoted Razali as saying.

Nominations were a more muted affair at most centres, though gatherings and marches still took place at some places.

The authorities had banned such gatherings to curb the spread of Covid-19, with candidates supposed to only come with their proposer and seconder.
