He said this is to prevent assemblymen from withdrawing their support for the incoming administration, or a repeat of the incidents that led to the collapse of the previous state government.
At a press conference with former Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali, Mohamad – or more fondly known as Tok Mat – also said BN has a long track record of governing Melaka.
“This is why we should be the core party to lead the new state government,” he said.
Mohamad also urged the election commission (EC) to re-evaluate the SOPs as it was difficult for all parties to campaign during the election.
“I was surprised to receive reports from our party workers that putting up flags and the setting up of a polling district centre was not allowed.
“We understand the situation today but flexibility should be given as the party needs to meet voters in their respective constituencies,” he said.
Mohamad added that the EC should rethink the implementation of the SOPs and should not go to extremes, such as asking party workers for identity cards for inspection.
“BN hopes that the EC reconsider the SOPs as there are many villages as well as the grassroots from all parties who want to meet their respective candidates.
“Flexibility should be given as it can jeopardise the spirit of this election. Regardless, BN takes the SOP seriously and will abide by it at all times,” he said, adding that at least 90% of the adult population in Melaka had been vaccinated.
