Bernama reported that the decision was posted on Facebook by Nagaenthran’s lawyer, M Ravi.

“The High Court has just ordered a stay of execution pending the hearing of the appeal to the Court of Appeal against the decision of the High Court,” Ravi was quoted as saying.

The constitutional challenge against the execution of Nagaenthran, 33, was heard via zoom today.

Nagaenthran was sentenced to death after he was convicted of trafficking in 42.7gm of diamorphine (heroin) in 2011 following his arrest two years earlier.

Rights groups in Malaysia and abroad have been urging Singapore to commute his death sentence to life imprisonment, claiming that Nagaenthran suffered from a mental disability and had an IQ of only 69.

Yesterday, it was reported that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had written to his Singaporean counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong, seeking leniency in the case.
