KUALA LUMPUR:
More than 7,000 people have been charged with online gambling offences since 2019, said deputy home affairs minister Ismail Mohamed Said.

Responding to a question in the Dewan Rakyat today from Noorita Sual (PH-Tenom), he said the ministry was also concerned about the participation in gambling activities of those under the age of 18, and would provide written answers with statistics on this later.

“The government always cares, and will examine what form of action needs to be taken.

“This includes whether we need to make amendments to the (Common Gaming Houses Act 1953) to include online gambling,” he said.

In 2019, 2,294 were charged with online gambling, which rose to 2,911 in 2020.

This year, there have been 2,165 charges.

While it is illegal to operate an online casino in Malaysia, patronising one that is hosted internationally is often considered a grey area in the law, as there are no specific references to this in the act.
