PETALING JAYA:
Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for the Melaka state election will be required to sign statutory declarations (SDs) and other agreements, says BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad said the 28 candidates will sign the SDs and agreements when they are handed over their appointment letters as BN representatives for the polls.

“This serves as a reminder not to ‘party-hop’ once they’ve won,” he said, according to a Sinar Harian report, following an event in Negeri Sembilan today.

Melaka goes to the polls on Nov 20, with nominations set for Monday.

Election watchdog Bersih 2.0 had urged political parties to pledge that they will not accept “frogs” after the election is over.

Pengerang MP and former law minister Azalina Othman Said had also called for an anti-hopping law to be enacted in Melaka, saying this was discussed during a recent meeting with state governor Mohd Ali Rustam.

She suggested that any assemblyman who quit his party should be automatically expelled from the assembly or that voters be allowed to file a petition to have the assemblyman removed if he switches parties.
