While customers can still purchase beer at such premises, they can only be sold from 7am to 9pm, said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in a statement.

The ban, which was announced last November and was supposed to start on Oct 1, was temporarily suspended for a study DBKL was conducting.

On Sept 30, federal territories minister Shahidan Kassim said the new rules were put on hold for a month to allow discussion with stakeholders.

“All relevant parties have expressed their views and concerns on this matter,” said DBKL in today’s statement.

“After considering the views of all the parties involved, DBKL has decided to streamline and refine the existing guidelines.

“The new guidelines and conditions for applications for liquor licences are effective from Nov 1 and must be complied with by all parties involved in this industry.”

The ban had come under fire from opposition lawmakers and civil society alike after it was announced last year due to concerns about the violation of the rights of non-Muslims.
