Birthday bash sparks Covid-19 cluster in Sabah, 49 infected

Sabah minister Masidi Manjun says it all started with a man who held birthday celebrations over three days and attended another party before showing symptoms.

The 565 new Covid-19 cases reported today bring Sabah’s cumulative number to 215,079.
KOTA KINABALU:
A birthday celebration could have created the Kimolohing cluster in Ranau, resulting in 49 of the Covid-19 cases reported today, Sabah housing and local government minister Masidi Manjun said.

“The index case in the community cluster is a local man who tested positive for Covid-19 on Oct 18.

“Based on our initial investigation, the man held a series of birthday celebrations on Oct 12 until Oct 14 at his house. Then on Oct 16, he attended a birthday celebration at a relative’s house.

“The man had symptoms since Oct 17, underwent screening the next day, and was found to be positive.

“The screening of close contacts found 48 individuals from the same locality positive for the virus, thus bringing the cumulative number of cases in this cluster to 49,” he said in a statement.

Masidi, who is the state’s Covid-19 spokesman, also said 565 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Sabah today, bringing the cumulative number in the state to 215,079. There were 820 recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries thus far to 204,633.
