This came after the MPs voted for the EOs to be revoked after almost 30 MPs debated the issue.
Most of the opposition MPs said it should have been debated much earlier and not after the Emergency was lifted on Aug 1.
Earlier today, the government tabled a motion to repeal the EOs with debates by MPs followed by winding-up speeches by the relevant ministries in the Dewan Rakyat.
It covers the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021; Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021; Emergency (Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 and Emergency (Essential Powers) (No. 2) Ordinance 2021.
It also covers the Emergency (Essential Powers) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021; Emergency (Offenders Compulsory Attendance) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021; and the Emergency (National Trust Fund) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021.
In July, Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration came under fire after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong expressed disappointment for revoking the EOs without his consent.
The palace had also said the then law minister Takiyuddin Hassan had misled Parliament on the revocation and the government did not fulfil its promise to debate the matter in Parliament.
This subsequently led to Muhyiddin’s resignation as prime minister a month later after failing to secure a majority to remain in power.
