PETALING JAYA:
The island of Langkawi will be opened to fully vaccinated foreign tourists from Nov 15, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced.

On top of the vaccination requirement, the travellers must stay for at least three days, download and use MySejahtera and undergo a Covid-19 test three days prior to their flight to Langkawi.

Currently, Langkawi is open only to tourists in Malaysia who have been fully vaccinated.

In a statement, Ismail said the three-month travel bubble would be allowed for select countries and high-yield tourists only. There were no specifics given on what constituted high-yield tourists.

The countries allowed will be determined by the foreign affairs and health ministries, as well as the immigration department, he said.

Ismail said travellers must have an insurance cover of at least US$80,000 and must engage a registered tour operator. No quarantine will be imposed on travellers upon arrival, he said.

The SOPs before departure to Langkawi include:

  • Valid passport, visa, health declaration and letter of undertaking and indemnity.
  • MySejahtera app downloaded and registered.
  • An RT-PCR test at least three days before the travel date, with results on paper or electronic form.

Upon arrival in Malaysia, travellers arriving via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport will have to go through rapid molecular testing for Covid-19, with a test result wait time of 90 minutes.

Those arriving in Langkawi directly will go through an RT-PCR test on their second day. Travellers staying for three days will have to undergo an RT-PCR swab on their second day on the island. Those staying for more than five days are similarly required to get tested on the fifth day of their stay.

If tested positive, they will be placed at an isolation centre, quarantine facility or a private hospital, depending on the category of traveller. The categories were not specified.

Only one tour guide is allowed in a group of 20 tourists.

Travellers are also required to undergo an RT-PCR test three days before leaving Langkawi.
