MMA president Dr Koh Kar Chai said Melaka politicians were being selfish and irresponsible in wanting to have an election just when the nation is on the road to recovery from the pandemic.
In a statement, he said that although many have been vaccinated, the positive cases reported in the country were still high.
“Many children have been orphaned and women widowed by this dreaded disease.

“Many victims have been left suffering from ‘Long Covid’, with some tethered to oxygen concentrators for God knows how long.
“Having a state election now would be like going ‘from the frying pan and into the fire’.”
Koh also said Melaka politicians were inconsiderate and had forgotten the sacrifices made by medical frontliners who had been battling the pandemic and facing danger constantly when treating the thousands of patients going to the hospitals.
He said the vaccination programme had proven to be a blessing for these frontliners who had worked so hard to treat Covid-19 patients.
Yesterday, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told Malaysiakini that the ministry was bracing itself for the “worst” if the Melaka state election proceeds.
“We are preparing for the worst possible situation.
“Just like in Sabah, we advise that there be no elections. We have not yet recovered from Covid-19 infections,” he was quoted as saying by the portal.
The health ministry reported 9,890 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours. A total of 105 Covid-19 deaths were reported yesterday. Melaka reported 260 cases.
