MP slams ‘same old answers’ on Sabah’s migrant woes

KOTA KINABALU:
A Sabah MP has criticised home minister Hamzah Zainudin over the same reply the latter gave when responding on Putrajaya’s actions in resolving the state’s long-standing undocumented migrant issue in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Sandakan MP Vivian Wong said she had asked the same question last year and likened the migrant issue as the “mother of all problems” in Sabah.

She said she had requested the government to outline a concrete strategy to overcome the problem following a report by the royal commission of inquiry on the undocumented migrants.

She said Hamzah had replied then that the government had established a state management committee on foreigners to resolve the issue.

“Today, when asked what had been done, the same minister repeated the same answer from last year, without any real progress having taken place,” Wong said in a statement here today.

“The same was repeated over the formation of the special committee, with more meetings and engagements.

“The minister also had the audacity to say the issue needed political will from all quarters.

“This clearly shows the government lacks the commitment and desire to resolve this issue.”

Wong questioned the logic behind using taxpayers’ money to build more temporary detention centres to hold undocumented migrants.

“This is actually a sign that the government has failed to manage and control the issue.

“We desperately need a more comprehensive system to identify and manage the presence of the migrant population.

“Enough is enough. Implement what has been said or resign. We need immediate action by the government,” she said.
