PETALING JAYA:
Nearly 300 illegal immigrants living in seven containers in Semenyih, Selangor, were detained in a midnight raid by immigration authorities.

The raiding party checked 326 people at the housing site at Jalan Eco Majestic 1/2c and detained 297 of them, according to immigration director-general Khairul Zaimee Daud.

Those detained are from several countries including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam and Ghana.

“The presence of many foreign women, especially from Vietnam, raises doubts as they are suspected of carrying out immoral activities,” Khairul said.

He said the operation was a result of complaints from nearby residents.

“The surrounding residents had complained that there are settlements that are overcrowded, do not comply with hygiene aspects and have the potential to be breeding grounds for dengue,” he told reporters at the scene.

He also said most of the foreigners were working in the manufacturing and construction sectors and some ran their own businesses.
