KUALA LUMPUR:
A DAP MP has questioned the government over the lack of federal allocations for Penang under the 12th Malaysia Plan to build new infrastructure, as well as for maintaining existing ones.

RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) said allocations that had been promised for flood mitigation projects in Jelutong and maintenance of the Penang International Airport were no longer there.

He said projects proposed by the Penang state government, like the LRT project and the Penang Hill cable car project, have also been scrapped and wanted to know why Penangites were being sidelined by the federal government.

“Why is Penang being sidelined? Aren’t Penangites also Malaysians?” asked Rayer.

In June last year, the Perikatan Nasional government scrapped the RM100 million Penang Hill cable car project. The state government had said the project was necessary to boost tourism in Penang.

Environmental NGOs like Sahabat Alam Malaysia, however, welcomed the decision to scrap the project, claiming it was not suitable for environmentally sensitive areas of the Penang Hill and the Penang Botanic Gardens.
