KUALA LUMPUR:
The Inland Revenue Board has applied for a summary judgment on its suit against senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah over RM9.4 million in tax arrears for five assessment years.

A summary judgment is where a court decides a case without hearing testimony of witnesses.

The application was filed by the IRB on behalf of the government yesterday, on the grounds that Shafee had failed to pay the tax arrears within the stipulated time.

The suit will come up for case management on Oct 13.

The government’s claim is for additional assessments for the years 2011-2014 and 2016, interest, costs and other relief.

Shafee is the lawyer who represents former prime minister Najib Razak who was accused of misappropriation of funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd and 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

However, Shafee himself also faces two charges of receiving RM9.5 million in proceeds from unlawful activities from Najib and two charges of making false declarations to the IRB.
